General Functions:

The Recovery Services (RS) Peer Support Recovery Specialist will be an integral member of the Recovery Services department. This position is responsible for being a peer role model through lived experience in the area of recovery and overall wellness, providing support and encouragement to Recovery Services participants.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct peer support to RS and re-entry that includes linkages to employment, housing, education, and community resources.
  • Under guidance of the Peer Recovery Supervisor, will promote peer support programs within Recovery Services and surrounding communities.
  • Assist participants with transportation and escort when needed for supported workforce and/or medical appointments that assist with self-directed recovery and independence.
  • Document in participant’s electronic health record within the Recovery Services Case Management System (RSCMS), including all individual and group peer support services in accordance with Recovery Services policies and procedures.
  • Maintain an active awareness of the peer support services that are available in the state of Alaska.
  • Provide resources by conducting needed peer support and case management services to alumni and active participants across the R/S continuum.
  • Provide support to the Therapeutic Village of Care (TVC) and Chanlyut programs structures, policies, and philosophies.
  • Facilitate individual peer support services and peer support group sessions as needed for active and alumni participants of Recovery Services and Chanlyut.
  • Provide motivational interviewing, community living skills, social, and emotional support to participants within RS and Chanlyut to assist participants in regaining balance and control of their lives.
  • Maintain appropriate trainings and certifications as outlined in RS policy and procedures and those designated by supervisor.
  • Active role model for wellness and recovery for participants.
  • Engage in all assigned peer outreach activities in the community and provide a report out to RS and Chanlyut staff on community efforts and opportunities for participants.
  • Attend RS staff meetings and works collaboratively with other staff  members during  participant  case staffing  regarding transitional and  discharge planning needs, to facilitate a successful transitional from treatment services to the community.
  • Provide weekly reports on outreach/peer support activities, participant services to Peer Recovery Coordinator.
  • Develop responsible, appropriate relationships with participants.
  • Resolve participant /staff questions concerning behaviors, curriculum, work therapy etc.
  • Maintain confidentiality according to regulations and procedures.
  • Perform all related duties as assigned.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to interact with sensitivity and effectiveness while working with clients, external agencies and coworkers.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and exercise good judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Must have strong writing skills with attention to detail and accuracy of fact reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with individual from diverse backgrounds. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to operate computer and other standard office equipment.
  • Valid Alaska Driver’s License and be insurable under CITC’s automobile insurance (based on points, moving violations, length of driving experience, etc. as reflected in the DMV report).
  • Lived experience in addiction recovery, and one year continuous sobriety prior to hire and active and continuing participation in a recovery support program, such as a 12 step program.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory state and federal background check. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recovery Coach Certification.
  • Experience in residential or outpatient substance use treatment and mutual aid (A.A., N.A., etc.).
  • Current access to all DOC facilities and continue to remain in compliance with all State of Alaska requirements associated with having access to correctional facilities.
