General Functions:

Under the supervision of the Child Care Manager, the Child Care Aide provides a creative learning environment to encourage the development and safety of children in our care; and establishes daily routines that are age appropriate for the developing levels of children in the Child Care center.  The individual must be familiar with the program’s policies, health and safety regulations and emergency procedures, and implement the policies and procedures as necessary.

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate with a coworker to develop a weekly / monthly curriculum to include developmentally and culturally appropriate activities for children; and prepare age appropriate materials for the classroom.
  • Provide activities and opportunities to encourage curiosity, exploration, and problem-solving appropriate to the developmental levels and learning styles of children
  • Use space, relationships, materials and routines to construct an interesting, secure and enjoyable environment for children in which to learn and explore.
  • Collaborate with a coworker to maintain inventories of center supplies, places orders, shops or re-stocks supplies as needed.
  • Maintain friendly professionally courteous environment and cooperative relationship with each child’s family.
  • Ensure the classroom is maintained in an attractive and organized appearance, including the display of the children’s art work.
  • Maintain standards of hygiene to ensure the day care center is cleaned and sanitized   
  • Maintain safety of children by following arrival and departure procedures.
  • Utilize a beeper system for the safety of children while in the custody of the day care center.
  • Check and inspect damage, broken or modified toys; and remove and/or discard toys that appeared to present harm to the children.
  • Monitors indoor and outdoor areas to ensure safety conditions
  • Uses proper techniques to prevent injuries and handle emergencies, accidents and illnesses appropriately.
  • Models and encourages good health and nutrition habits with children.
  • Participate in required trainings and meetings as required.
  • Maintains confidentiality according to regulations and procedures.
  • Accurately input child care information into the Child Care Data Base for quarterly / annual reports
  • Must meet attendance requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality according to regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform all related duties as assigned.   

Job Specifications:

  • Exceptional time management, prioritization, problem solving, and detail oriented skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Able to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions related to child care and child safety as part of a team and independently.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the stages of child development; ability to identify children’s physical, social, mental, and emotional developmental needs; and ability to effectively meet children’s identified needs while in the Center.
  • Makes decisions based on knowledge of early childhood theories and practices, promotes quality in child care services, and takes advantage of opportunities to improve competence.
  • Demonstrated ability to use Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Maintain respectful, supportive relationships with all participants and children in the Center.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Able to provide proof of negative TB test result upon hiring.
  • Have a current, or willing to complete CPR / First Aide Certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Must be able to obtain a Child Development Associate (CDA) certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Be able to bend, kneel or stoop to assist and interact with children.
  • Be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Continued employment status will be contingent upon completion of a satisfactory state and federal criminal background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in multicultural and multi-age group (0-5 years of age) environment
  • Possess a CDA
  • Knowledge of Alaska Native and American Indian Culture and/ or community resources
  • Willing to acquire additional skills and training towards a degree in Child Care Development.
