    Regular, Full-Time

     

    General Functions:

    Responsible for providing quality education to infant and toddlers, with the goal of increasing the social competence, school readiness, and knowledge and pride in traditional Alaska Native culture and heritage. This position requires a person to effectively manage a sometimes chaotic environment while supervising simultaneous activities. Regular and consistent attendance is expected to support classroom continuity. 

     

    This Teacher role is designed to provide progressively more responsibility and independent work experiences to enable a potential progression thru the Teacher levels based on performance in prior assignments, education attainment, and the demonstrated ability to successfully manage more gradually responsible assignments.

     

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Assists in the development and implementation of plans to enhance the education, health, social and emotional growth in children and families served, and to provide opportunities for families to interact in positive ways, improve parenting skills, and empower themselves to create positive changes in their lives
    • Assesses the physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and language needs of enrolled children with a variety of screening and observation tools
    • Develops lesson plans that challenge, strengthen, and meet the individual learning goals and developmental needs of enrolled children, in accordance with the Teaching Strategies Creative Curriculum guidelines
    • Utilizes a variety of teaching strategies to meet educational and developmental goals and the physical, emotional, social, cultural, cognitive and language needs of enrolled children
    • Utilizes appropriate discipline and guidance techniques such as redirection, acknowledgement of appropriate behavior, and setting acceptable limits
    • Provides a healthy, safe and secure learning environment through the use of consistent limits, appropriate guidance techniques, and the development of an atmosphere of respect for children and adults
    • Encourages parental involvement 
    • Provides training for parents and other staff through role modeling, discussions, and other means
    • Functions as a member of Head Start/ Early Head Start team by participating in staff meetings, training, planning and problem solving sessions
    • Visits each child’s home twice per year in accordance with Head Start regulations and meets with parents/guardians to become familiar with the child’s home environment
    • Accurately completes all paperwork, including: home visit forms, parent/teacher conference forms, lesson plans, work sampling and transition forms

    Job Specifications:

    Teacher in training

    • Strong oral and written communication skills
    • Willingness to learn all necessary components of position
    • Ability to work independently, when necessary
    • Ability to maintain quality safety and infection control standards
    • Learning computer basics in ChildPlus and center curriculum website, Teaching Strategies Creative Curriculum for Infants Toddlers and Twos
    • Ability to support teachers in preparing for individual and group learning activities
    • Supports children with a variety of age-appropriate learning experiences in all areas of development including social/emotional, cognitive and language, and gross and fine motor skills
    • Monitors and assists in positive strategies to prevent aggressive behavior and to deescalate volatile situations
    • Understands basic child assessment, educational reporting with parents, and individual care plans for children
    • Keeps inventory of needed objects (diapers, wipes, bibs, blankets, etc.) in the classroom full
    • Other duties as assigned

    Teacher I

    • Perform all duties/responsibilities of Teacher-in-training with a high level of proficiency
    • Ability to maintain open, friendly, and cooperative relationships with families, to encourage program involvement, and to promote parent-child bonding and nurturing parent-child relationships
    • Ability to promote feelings of security and trust in infants/toddlers and preschoolers by being warm, supportive, and comforting, and by establishing strong and caring relationships with them
    • Ability to provide children with experiences and opportunities that allow them to develop curiosity, initiative, problem-solving skills, and creativity, as well as a sense of self and a feeling of belonging
    • Ability to conduct developmental screenings of infant and toddler motor, language, social, cognitive, perceptual, and emotional skills
    • Demonstrates ability to train the Teacher in training
    • Demonstrates competent computer knowledge in ChildPlus and center curriculum website, Teaching Strategies Creative Curriculum for Infants, Toddlers and Twos
    • Demonstrates ability to implement  individual and group learning activities
    • Creates plans that support children with a variety of age-appropriate learning experiences in all areas of development including social/emotional, cognitive, language, and gross and fine motor skills
    • Monitors and assists in positive strategies to prevent aggressive behavior and to deescalate volatile situations.
    • Other duties as assigned

    Teacher II

    • Will perform all job specifications of Teacher in training and Teacher I at a level of proficiency
    • Ability to maintain classroom operation to include planning, carrying out activities, maintaining environment, supervising children, staff and volunteers, parent teacher conferences
    • Ability to implement program curriculum for infants and toddler classrooms
    • Ensures compliance with Head Start performance standards for the education component by following guidance from supervisor and department manager
    • Mentoring teachers and teacher trainees in the classroom and on lesson plans/reports.
    • Ability to independently perform tasks in the classroom, have plans, documents, and reports in on time
    • Excels in and can assist with any computer knowledge in ChildPlus and center curriculum website, Teaching Strategies Creative Curriculum for Infants Toddlers and Twos
    • Demonstrates ability to begin and teach individual and group learning activities
    • Other duties as assigned

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Teacher in training:

    • High school diploma or G.E.D.
    • CDA preferred or must be enrolled in CDA certification program and obtain within 6 months of employment
    • CPR/First Aid certified, or willing to obtain within six (6) months of hire
    • Must successfully complete TB and physical examination
    • Continued employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory report from a state and federal background and references check

    Teacher I

    • High school diploma or GED
    • Child Development Associate Credential (CDA)
    • Two (2) years of experience in teaching infants/toddlers/preschool children
    • Knowledgeable in working in a Head Start/Early Head Start environment
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, health, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian community
    • Must successfully complete TB and physical examination
    • Continued employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory report from a state and federal background and references check

    Teacher II

    • High school diploma or GED
    • A.A, B.A., in Early Childhood Education or related field
    • Supervisory experience preferred
    • Three-five (3-5) years’ experience in teaching children
    • Knowledgeable in working in a Head Start/Early Head Start environment
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, health, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian community
    • Must successfully complete TB and physical examination
    • Continued employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory report from a state and federal background and references check

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Valid Alaska driver’s license and insurable under CSELC’s automotive insurance

    Work Environment:

    • Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs. intermittently, standing for long periods of time, stooping  and bending, filling buckets with water, pulling mop buckets, vacuuming, stacking chairs, moving tables, filling the sand and water tables, etc.
    • Able to manage multiple stressful priorities simultaneously.
