    Job Title: Health and Safety Manager
    Department: Clare Swan Early Learning Center (CSELC)
    Reports To: Senior Manager
    FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
    Pay Grade: C4
    Job Type: Regular, Full-Time

    General Functions:   

    The Health and Safety Coordinator position is responsible to ensure compliance in all health and safety practices within the Clare Swan Early Learning Center (CSELC). This position monitors and assists in all safety aspects for CSELC’s programs, facilities as required by National, State, and Municipal regulations. This position is responsible to help education staff members and families of Health and Safety regulations and procedures, along with encouraging healthy habits in families.


    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Develop and assess professional development plans related to education service delivery.
    • Provide educational component input to early Head Start Manager for annual performance evaluations.
    • Promote skill development by mentoring staff, coaching one-on-one, providing technical assistance, and facilitating teacher training as required.

     Individualized Classroom Services:

    • Provides expertise and support in developing sound early childhood classroom environments by completing Practice Based Coaching (PBC) using the Together Learning & Collaborating (TLC) small group model for Head Start teachers (one group) and providing feedback.
    • Collaborates with center directors for creating a cohesive approach to working with the classroom team.
    • Reviews CLASS assessment scores to help identify areas of strength and develop group and individual goals for improvement.
    • Monitors and evaluates the progress of goals, coaching cycles, strategies, and plans implemented and works with teams to improve teaching practices.
    • Provides direct observation of coaching participants in the classroom environment and provides feedback and role-modeling on teaching practices.

    Job Specifications:

    • Proficiency in the use of ChildPlus, Teaching Strategies Gold, Ages and Stages and other EHS based software.
    • Ability to communicate fluently (oral and written), effectively, and respectfully.
    • Ability to coach and work effectively in a team environment.
    • Ability to work well within a teamwork while role modeling positive behavior and individual responsibility.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in staff education.
    • Demonstrated exceptional customer service practices.
    • Knowledge and ability to facilitate and report on large scale projects.
    • Ability to participate in work related evening and weekend activities on a regular basis.
    • Must be able to work with minimal supervision, and also collaborate across the organization as well with individuals and groups outside of CSELC.

    Current Resources and Community Collaboration:

    • Maintains currency of knowledge and resources in all areas of child development through networking with other service providers in the community and Region X T/TA.
    • Participates in the Office of Head Start’s My Peers coaching support system.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field.
    • Minimum of five (5) years in Head Start/Early Head Start with management and classroom experience.
    • First Aid/CPR certification, must acquire within three (3) months of date of hire.
    • Must provide copy of current TB test and physical upon hire.
    • Valid Alaska driver’s license and insurable under CSELC’s automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age.
    • Continued employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory report from a state and federal background check.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Current or former Head Start Parent.

    Hiring preference shall be given to eligible and qualified Alaska Native/American Indian applicants pursuant to P.L. 93-638 Indian Self Determination Act.


    Hiring preference shall be given according to Head Start Performance Standard 1302.90 Personnel Policies (b) (6), “A program must consider current and former program parents for employment vacancies for which such parents apply and are qualified.”
